Let’s say it from the start, I’m not a fan of the Super Bowl. In fact, I don’t even like football! I find it difficult to understand the interest of two teams running from one side to the other of a long course to hurling and hurting themselves every minute. But that’s a personal opinion.
On the other hand, what I appreciate most of all is all that happens around the Super Bowl. The artistic performance of the half-time, the many incredible commercials that are broadcast during the event and most importantly, the ritual that takes place between friends or family. The gathering. Because it is a unifying event.
The only problem in my case (and probably yours or someone you know) is phenylketonuria. Super Bowl says inevitably food, chicken wings, pizza, etc. Good advice: the Super Bowl is long. It is in your best interest to arrive prepared at your friends’ or your family’s home, otherwise the temptation to eat things that you can’t become very, very strong.
My plan to not be too different from the rest of the group? Cambrooke Tweekz chicken nuggets! I prepare a good portion that I bring with me or I prepare them on site. In general, the people I visit know about my condition.
But chicken nuggets must be accompanied with a BBQ sauce. And it turns out that my girlfriend has an excellent homemade recipe (much better than commercial sauces).
- 2 tbsp. tomato paste
- 2 tbsp. mustard
- Red Hot Sauce
- Worcesteshire sauce
- Liquid smoke
- Spices: salt, pepper, paprika, caraway, garlic powder, dehydrated onions
The preparation is very simple, we just have to mix everything. In general, we go to taste, hence the reason I did not indicate quantities for most ingredients. However, 2 tbsp. is a good indicator when it comes to tomato paste and mustard.
This is a very simple snack, perfect for PKUers, but which is rather unnoticed since it is similar to the typical Super Bowl menu. 🙂
And you, what snacks do you prepare to survive the Super Bowl?
